Carl Zeiss has ended the first six months of fiscal year 2010/11 with a substantial improvement in sales and earnings over the previous year: revenues totalled EUR 2.143 billion, an increase of 19 percent over the previous year, and earnings before income tax (EbIT) were EUR 355 million.

Conservative MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke, Jack Lopresti (centre) opened the new headquarters of optical metrology pioneers Third Dimension  on  Friday 24 June 2011. Third Dimension is the manufacturer of the GapGun range of products, which are precision shop floor optical metrology tools for the aerospace and automotive manufacturing industries. The new headquarters, which houses the company’s office and manufacturing staff and is 50 per cent larger than their previous HQ, is in the Brabazon Office Park in Filton, South Gloucestershire. www.third.com.

In the first quarter of 2011, order bookings in the German machine tool industry showed three-figure growth rates - according to the VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association). Compared to the preceding year’s equivalent period, orders in the months January to March rose by 130 per cent. Domestic and export demand developed well-nigh identically: order bookings from the domestic market were up by 127 per cent, demand from abroad by 132 per cent.

The Industrial Group of Moog Inc.has been awarded a contract to supply structural and fatigue test systems to the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) in India.

Technology company, Renishaw, have issued an Interim management statement on its trading activity which reports a  strong performance of the Group throughout the third quarter of this financial year.

Ola Rollén, CEO and president of Hexagon AB.  gave a bullish forecast  of company’s prospects for the next four years at a Capital Market day, held in Orlando, Florida on 6th June.   He outlined two possible scenarios for growth. with a  financial plan  stretching to 2015. It includes a sales target of 3.5 billion EUR and an EBIT margin target of 25 per cent.

The Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS) has announced tthat Frank M. Foeller of The Boeing Company will be the keynote speaker at the 27th Annual Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference (CMSC), July 25 - 29, 2011 being held at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel and Spa in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.


Geomagic and Nikon Metrology have entered into a cooperative agreement that enables Nikon Metrology to fully integrate and offer its entire range of handheld 3D laser scanners with Geomagic Studio, Geomagic Qualify, and Geomagic Wrap.

The UK offers great potential career prospects to young engineers, but is in danger of losing its competitive edge in the engineering sector according to a new report by GE in the UK. The GE Young Minds Monitor (1) surveyed almost 1,000 lecturers and students of engineering and found contrasting attitudes to the UK's global standings and future prospects.


In recent years, the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has made significant investments in dimensional measurement and inspection facilities, which are housed in state-of-the-art laboratories at NPL, Teddington.
