The results from the MTA’s monthly survey of members  published March 16th,  show a positive swing in the number of manufacturing technology companies taking on new staff, with nearly a quarter of respondents reporting an increase in employment compared to the previous month. 

Hexagon Metrology, suppliers of dimensional metrology systems, have entered into a number of partnership with leading  machine tool companies in the UK.  One such partnership is with Dormer Tools based in Sheffield.  At Dormer’s  new facility in Waverley, near Sheffield, there is a concentration of high technology cutting tool solutions. The partnership agreement will provides various solutions to this facility from Hexagon Metrology’s range of high-tech dimensional metrology systems. 

The EU Ozone Depletion Regulations have been amended and companies that employ engineers to work with refrigerants now require new qualifications that meet the full requirements of EC/303/2008 for RAC. This is referred to as “the F Gas Regulations”.

Icona Solutions, the developer of the perceived quality simulation and visualization software solution, aesthetica, has secured an additional investment through Funds managed by IP Group plc to enable it to open new offices in the north east of England. The new investment completes a £550,000 financing

Materials Testing – the international showcase for the non-destructive testing (NDT), materials testing, quality and mechanical testing, condition monitoring and diagnostic engineering industries – will take place from 13-15 September 2011 in Telford, UK.

Encouraging figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on the growth of the manufacturing sector are set to provide a highly topical backdrop for the forthcoming National Manufacturing Debate at Cranfield University on May 25th.

"Europe's machine tool production in 2010 amounts to one third of the world's output, while a year earlier CECIMO members accounted for 43%. This clearly and strongly demonstrates the dynamic development in the Asian markets", Frank Brinken, Chairman of CECIMO's Economic Committee says. CECIMO is the European Association of the Machine Tool Industries.


Knowledge is power. Lack of knowledge entails inefficiency - not least and particularly when it comes to the production processes of the future and their chances for success on the global markets. This, at any rate, is the firm conviction of the researchers at the Stuttgart-based Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology and Automation (IPA). IPA Director Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Westkämper, for instance, never tires of pointing out that "up-to-the-future production systems demand utilisation of knowledge on all levels of the hierarchy".


The UK's newly-appointed Minister for Trade & Investment, Lord Green, visited CADCAM developer Delcam on 2nd March. He attended the Aerospace Opportunities 2011 event being held at the company's Birmingham headquarters and also toured the site.


Creaform, leader in portable 3D optical measurement technologies and 3D engineering services, has had its best year since inception, with annual sales of $27.3 million for 2010, which makes for a growth of 25% over 2009. 2010 Q4 sales of $9.6 million have set a new record in the history of the company, representing a 49% increase from fiscal year 2009.
